Nathaniel from Clear Brew South Lakes

1.   What did you do previously, before becoming a business owner with Clear Brew Ltd?

Prior to Clear Brew I was a manager at Barclays Bank. I started there in October 2010 as a personal banker and worked my way up to the position of branch manager.

2.  What made you consider investing in a franchise with Clear Brew?

I had always wanted to run my own business but decided to really start thinking about it due to the branch closures in retail banking and not seeing my future in the corporate world of business banking, or the other options available to me at Barclays.

I remember the day I had a challenging day at work and on my lunch, I googled “franchises for sale.” I came across a few I liked and applied for my information. Upon reading more about Clear Brew and the business model it seemed a superb idea and one that would add real value and improve quality for any customers, a real no brainer.

I did around 6 months’ worth of research and went to visit Stephen in Cornwall. I decided to take the plunge, and although it was harder to get my foot in the door to begin with, I haven’t looked back since.

3.  What has been your best business achievement in the past year?

We unfortunately lost our biggest customer after Christmas last year (due to cost cutting after the Omicron variant) which did rock me quite a lot. Since then, I have continued our push for new business and we now find the business in a better position, with more customers than we had at this time last year. Given the economic challenges we have faced in the last 12 months I really am delighted we overcame a set back and came back stronger.

4.  What do you like about the Clear Brew business model? Has it lived up to your expectations?

The main driver for me is the regular repeat business the model provides. The nature of our three weekly visits gives a regular reliable income working pattern, which I love. It would be fair to say Clear Brew has exceeded my expectations. If you had told me I would be in this situation now when I started, I would have been delighted.

5.  What difference are you making to businesses that you service in your local community?

We obviously help them with their staffing needs, which is very important at the moment, or we help free up some of the business owners time, which I can appreciate given I am self-employed.

I also pride myself on being a helping hand when it comes to any issues or questions in terms of the cellar or dispense. I happily make visits to our customers for no charge to help with any issues.

6.  Please tell me about the support you have within the Clear Brew franchise network.

The franchise network is simply invaluable. It provides a huge wealth of knowledge at our fingertips. The WhatsApp group in particular is superb.

7.  What have you learned most about in the past 12 months?

Not to get to down hearted if things don’t go so well or we lose customers. It always affects me when we lose a customer for whatever reason, much more than the satisfaction I get from taking on a new customer, which I know shouldn’t be the case. There are things outside of my control and businesses all have their ups and downs.

8.  What business goals do you want to achieve in the next 12 months?

We are in a position at the moment to take on a second technician, but I have decided to hang fire for now due to the economic and cost of living factors. I would very much like to take another tech on in the new year to allow us to grow further, but I don’t want to over commit at this stage.

9.  What are your interests/hobbies?

I enjoy bouldering and go to my local climbing wall at least twice a week.

10.  How has having a franchise with Clear Brew helped you with your work/life balance?

This is a funny one really as day to day my work life balance is superb. We have early starts (alarm was 4.45 today) but in return we get early finishes (I should be home for 12). I can then plan my prospecting / book work etc around family and other commitments, which really is wonderful and something I hugely appreciate.

The flip side is I really struggle to take time off due to the business model and staffing etc. In the 6 years I have been in business I have had 2 full weeks off. Although that said we do manage long weekends here and there.

To that end we have just bought a caravan and intend on going away most weekends next year. It will allow us to go when the opportunity presents itself, and I can usually only plan things 3 to 6 weeks in advance.
